Joe Cordina was denied a US visa after an assault charge at home, and Top Rank turned to Albert Bell — a fighter with more professional rounds than Mason has fought in his entire career, and a live threat by style rather than reputation. The question isn't whether Mason is still favored. It's whether a replacement fighter can be a harder puzzle than the man he replaced.

Abdullah Mason, 22, defends his WBO lightweight title at home in Cleveland against Albert Bell, 33, a fighter who turned pro when Mason was nine years old and has never lost.
Mason won this title in November, stopping previously unbeaten Sam Noakes in Riyadh to become boxing's youngest reigning champion. Bell has been the WBO's forgotten man. He's 28-0 with 165 professional rounds — more than double Mason's 71 — built almost entirely on patient, jab-and-move decisions rather than knockouts. This is the shot he's been chasing since 2013.
Bell gives up three inches in height advantage over Mason at 6'0" to Mason's 5'9" — but Mason actually owns the reach edge, 74" to 73", a rare inversion for a shorter man. Bell's tall, upright frame carries the usual risk that comes with it: a chin that sits high and hands that drop late in exchanges, per scouting notes on his style. Mason's southpaw power against an orthodox jabber is the fight's core mechanical question.
The compressed timeline cuts both ways. Bell wasn't cold — he was already in camp for an IBF eliminator against Andy Cruz before this fight came together — but making 135 on two weeks' notice instead of a full camp is a real if unquantified variable. Mason's keys are simple: close the distance, work the body, let the power find him. Bell's path to the upset is volume and patience — take rounds in bunches, make Mason miss, survive to the championship rounds where his experience edge is real. If this goes past round eight, it's Bell's fight to steal on cards.

Carrington has been calling out Naoya Inoue since 2023, and told ESNEWS in May he's ready to move up and fight him the moment Inoue comes to featherweight. It's ambitious talk from a fighter who won his interim belt on a decision over Mateus Heita and became full champion with a ninth-round stoppage of Carlos Castro in January.
This opponent doesn't help that case. Rene Palacios is 19-0-1, but only eight of his twenty professional opponents entered with a winning record, and his last real step-up — Segawa — came by split decision, not a statement. Fans have already noted publicly that Carrington hasn't pursued unification with WBO's Espinoza or IBF's Leo either. This defense does little to quiet that criticism.

Mason didn't ask for a harder puzzle, but he got one. A routine voluntary defense against Cordina would have padded the record without proving anything new. A live, awkward veteran on two weeks' notice does the opposite — win this one and the résumé reads "solved a real problem," not "beat the scheduled opponent." That distinction is worth more to a 22-year-old champion's long-term case than the fight he lost.
Johnson gets his widest stage yet — a main-broadcast slot under a title fight, in his own city, against an opponent ranked close enough to matter. This is less about the win itself and more about how he gets it: outboxing a live, athletic unbeaten in front of a national audience is what turns "hometown Olympian" into a name casual fans recognize past Cleveland.
Carrington is the honest exception here. This card does not advance his case. Palacios doesn't force him to answer the critics already asking why he hasn't pursued Espinoza or Leo, and it does nothing to close the gap between his Inoue talk and his actual résumé. If Carrington's climb toward that level of stardom happens, it starts after tonight — not because of it.
